Last week we were invited to go to a sweet little birthday party for a soon to be 1 year old. While I know that she loves everything that all small toddlers love, I wanted to make her something that was not only cute, but unique as well. Something sweet that could hang on her door. I began to think of making something small to add in with her presents, and came up with this super cute Sew Simple Owl Pattern.
I created this pattern because I plan on using this little owl a lot! How cute for birthdays, etc. I can’t wait to make a few more of these…I have a few ideas up my sleeve!
To get started on this owl you will need:
- pattern (find the download at the end of this post)
- felt
- 6 inches of ribbon
- hot glue gun
- sewing machine
- foam insert (1 inch thick, cut slightly smaller than pattern circle)
First you are going to want to take your pattern and cut out all of the pattern pieces. I made this using felt and leftover fabric pieces from previous projects. This is such a great way to get rid of those scraps!
Once you have your pieces cut, go ahead and glue together the pieces of feet to the belly, small wings to larger wings, small ear pieces with larger ear pieces. Allow to dry (2 minutes).
Once you have your felt fabric pieces glued together, it’s time to work on the body. Glue the belly with feet to the front piece of your owl. Place your eyes where you would like them, and then using a simple straight stitch go around everything to make sure they are secure and in place.
Once you have your owl face all glued and stitched together, grab your other pieces and get ready to sew the “pillow” casing together. Place your wings, ears, and a little ribbon on top of the face, and pin into place. See picture below for guidance.
Place your backing over the top (now these are right sides together) and sew around your owl, leaving an opening of a few inches. Turn your owl right side out, and then insert your foam circle.
Once you have your foam piece inserted, you can then pin and straight stitch close! Quick and easy, and a fun craft for you and the kids. You could easily make this craft a no sew owl with just felt and a hot glue gun! My daughter’s pre-preschool class will be making these in a few weeks!
Grab your pattern below and get started!

Aww! As the mother of a current one-year-old, this is so wonderful. I have a friend whose son is obsessed with owls – I’d just have to put a “4” on there instead of a “1”.

That’s super easy! Hope you make them with the kiddos. 🙂

This is adorable! And your step-by-step guide lays it out so easy, I think even a crafty challenged person like myself could manage this!

Thanks Kristen! Grab a glue gun and some felt and scissors and skip the sewing machine. It will still be just as easy!

Thanks so much Melinda! I like making gifts, I made her a little dress, too. It’s more personal, and fun!
