Without ever seeing the movie Maleficent, my toddler decided that she wanted to be a witch for Halloween. Not Elsa, not Cinderella, not Tinkerbell….she wanted to be Maleficent. I am not sure where she came up with this idea, but far be it from me to dissuade her from her chosen costume. We came up with a plan for colors and created this fun costume with just a few supplies.

Supplies needed:
- black satin (1/2 yard)
- Ultra Firm (2 sided) stabilizer (1/2 yard)
- black tulle
- purple tulle
- purple ribbon
- black ribbon
- purple rickrack
- elastic
- thread and needle
- liquid stitch witch
- crochet body band
- purple lace
- fray check
The first thing I did was create the body piece with the tulle skirt. I created a lot of these cute little TuTu dressed for Addy when she was a baby, so I had all of these little body pieces left over. (They are 5 1/2″ in width and I ordered mine from Etsy a couple of years ago, so that is where I suggest searching for that piece.) I placed my crochet band over a cardboard T shirt mold and began creating the Tulle TuTu.
To get the length I wanted, I just wrapped the black tulle around the board and then cut the tulle on one of the sides.
This created the perfect length to pull these through the crochet band and create a quick knot. I did this all of the bottom of the band until I had a skirt.
After I had that finished, I added a few pieces of purple tulle with glitter along the front of the skirt. I then added a few pieces of purple and black ribbon along the front as well. Just make sure to add the fray check to the end of your ribbon pieces so they don’t fray.
With the skirt finished, it was time to start on the actual bodice of the costume. I cut two pieces of satin and a piece of the ultra firm stabilizer to the size I wanted. Pinning the satin onto both sides, I ironed the satin slowly onto the stabilizer. Once it was set, I then removed the pins and ironed out any wrinkles. It was super quick and easy. Once it was complete, I just cut off any extra areas that needed to be trimmed.

Next I grabbed the stitch witch and added all of the embellishments. (When you place the stitch witch on it comes out white, but it dries completely clear.) I carefully cut and measured the black ribbon and purple rickrack and lace and quickly glued them to the bodice.
After the bodice dried, I took a small piece of elastic I measure to fit my toddler and carefully hand sewed with my needle and thread just a few stitches to each side of the bodice, to hold it up onto her body. It’s a little hard because of the stabilizer, but just push through as hard as you can. After that, we were finished!
I went to the store and grabbed a little broom top, fancy fishnet fingerless gloves at the Halloween store, and a head piece for Maleficent. (Now you can actually make your own, just go to YouTube and search for the Maleficent headpiece videos, there are a few good ones!)
I hope you enjoyed this quick and easy DIY No Sew Maleficent costume.

How cute! the lady I worked with last year dressed up as Maleficent. We were all Disney villian’s. I was the queen of hearts and my other coworker was Ursula.

It’s incredible! I love her red lips.
I saw a Doctor Who costume on this list! Will have to read the Weeping Angel instructions.
