Chocolate Covered Pretzels

Chocolate Covered Pretzels are a fun and easy way to elevate a simple snack into a decadent treat. This crunchy snack makes our favorite treats a delicious combination and sweet and salty.

Pretzels dipped in your favorite chocolate, are great snacks for parties, kids games, or snacks on the go. They are also fun to make for holiday parties, and can be dipped in color candy melts to match a holiday or party theme.

Pretzels in chocolate are also a prefect sweet treat to wrap and give as gifts during the holiday season. Nothing says holiday cheer like homemade treats. Once I coat the pretzels in chocolate, I add red and green or rainbow sprinkles, place them in cellophane bags, and attach a gift card with a ribbon.

These homemade chocolate-coconut pretzels are one of those amazing recipes that has almost zero prep time. And once the coat of chocolate sets, you can add a white chocolate drizzle or colored sprinkles, and you have a salty snack of mini pretzels or pretzel rods, that everyone will love.

Ingredients:

Blocks of chocolate on a black plate and pretzel rods on a white square plate.
  • Pretzel Rods or Pretzel Twists-like Snyder’s mini twists work best for dipping
  • Melting Chocolate-white chocolate, dark chocolate, or milk chocolate

Optional: While the chocolate is still wet, sprinkle with coconut flakes, flaky sea salt, crushed toffee bits, crushed nuts, assorted Sprinkles, or mini chocolate chips.

Instructions:

To make chocolate pretzels, melt the chocolate in a double boiler over medium heat or in a microwave-safe bowl. If microwaving, begin with just heating for one minute, stir at 15-second intervals until the chocolate is completely melted.

Once the chocolate is ready, using a fork carefully dip each pretzel twist into the bowl of chocolate. If using pretzel rods, melt the chocolate in a microwave safe mug or deep bowl, then dip pretzels into chocolate.

Melted chocolate in a clear glass bowl with a pretzel rod dipped into the bowl.

Make sure to coat each pretzel evenly and tap off any excess chocolate before transferring to the baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper lined cookie sheet.

Let pretzels sit at room temperature to allow the chocolate to set for 15 minutes to 1 hour before serving.

Types of Chocolate to Use for Dipping

I use the almond bark chocolate coating, and for white chocolate pretzels, I use white candy melts. They are easy to use, and can be found in the baking aisle at your local grocery store. Color melting candies and chocolate melting wafers are also very easy to work with when dipping foods.

Milk chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, can also be used. Sometimes they take a little longer to harden after dipping. If this happens, place them in the refrigerator to firm.

FAQ’s

How do I store chocolate covered pretzels?

If you have any leftovers, store them in an airtight container. They should be good for up to 2-3 weeks. If you try to freeze them, they could become slightly soggy when thawed so I don’t advise that you freeze them.

What can I do with broken pretzels?

If you are using chocolate pretzels for homemade gifts, I sort out the broken pieces. You can store those in an airtight container, or keep in the bag and seal the top. You can also dip them in the excess chocolate you have for a crunchy snack.

How should I serve these pretzels?

Portion sizes of mini pretzels is about 15 pieces. The pretzel rods are about 3 pieces per serving and are great for kids parties or as Christmas party favors because they can be grabbed individually. If making a large bowl or trays for a gathering, the traditional pretzel twists are good for simple grabbing and munching party food.

Notes

Once you have finished dipping the pretzels into melted chocolate, top off the chocolate with sprinkles before it has time to set.
If you have additional chocolate that has dripped on the waxed paper, you can save it and re-melt it for future use.
For extra salty treats, you can sprinkle flaky salt on top of the melted chocolate.
When done dipping, scrap the sides of the bowl over wax paper to remove any chocolate. Do not rinse melted chocolate down the drain because it will harden.
