Best Type of Chocolate to Make Chocolate Covered Oreos

These chocolate cookie treats can be made with several types of melted chocolate, all of which can usually be found in the baking aisle in the local grocery store.

Chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, and chocolate wafer bits, all work well for the extra coat of chocolate. I like to use chocolate blocks because you can break them into sections as needed, and they harden quickly.

Sometimes, melting chocolate chips can take longer to re-firm, especially in warm temperatures. If you love traditional chocolate Oreos, you will love these Oreo chocolate truffles too!

How to Make Chocolate Covered Oreos

Melt chocolates in a microwave safe bowl. For best results, use a shallow bowl. Because chocolate can burn, when melting in the microwave, start with 60 seconds, and then stir. Continue microwaving in 30 second increments, stirring after each time.

For a smooth finish, use a clean dipping tool or fork tines and dip the cookie into the melted chocolate.

Working quickly, dip into the bowl of chocolate, spooning additional chocolate to completely coat the cookie. Gently tap or shake the cookie to let excess chocolate drip back into the bowl.

Place Oreos on parchment paper and let chocolate cool for 10-15 minutes to let chocolate set.

Once cookies are all dipped, melt additional chocolate, in a contrasting color, and use a spoon or piping bag to add an additional drizzle of chocolate on top of cookie.

Melting Chocolate on the Stovetop

Use a small to medium saucepan to melt your chocolate on a stove. Be sure to keep an eye on the chocolate while you have it on low to medium heat to melt, and stir constantly. Chocolate can melt, and will seize up, making it unusable. You can also use a double broiler with the bottom pan filled with water.

How to Make White Chocolate Covered Oreos

  • You can make white chocolate covered Oreos by just switching candy melts. Most color candy melts are vanilla flavored.

Variations:

  • For a perfect chocolate finish, you can use a silicone mold to cover these Oreos.
  • To use a mold, simply add a spoonful of chocolate into bottom of each mold, then add standard Oreos. Cover with chocolate and gently tap molds to remove any air bubbles. Let chocolate harden and then remove the cookies from the molds.
  • Once chocolate drizzle hardens, remove cookies from parchment paper. Scrape the dried extra chocolate drip on parchment paper and save to melt again for future desserts that require chocolate dipping.
  • Use these chocolate covered Oreos to decorate a cake or cupcake for a fun topper, that can be made to match a party theme.

FAQ’s

How do I store chocolate covered Oreos?

If you happen to have extra chocolate covered Oreos, keep dry in an airtight container or sealed in a Ziploc bag. These cookies should keep at room temperature for 1-2 weeks. However, if you live in a warmer climate, or if you used melting chocolate, or chips, you can keep in the refrigerator to prevent melting.

How do I get a shiny finish on my chocolate?

To get a high-quality shiny gloss on your dipped cookies, you need to have tempered chocolate. To temper chocolate, you will need a candy or chocolate thermometer. Place the chocolate in a double boiler, then melt the chocolate while stirring constantly until it reaches about 110-115 degrees F.

Can I use chocolate chips for coating these cookies?

Chocolate chips usually won’t temper because of it’s ingredients, so use real chocolate for tempering. For these cookies, it’s a little bit of extra time and work to make your chocolate have a shiny finish, so I suggest using chocolate melting wafers and dip in untempered chocolate.
