I totally have a scarf obsession, and if you have browsed this blog more than once, you know I have several tutorials for scarves. Today I am going to share with you a DIY Arm Knitting Chunky Cowl Scarf tutorial that I created. That’s right, it’s original and you are seeing it here FIRST! Plus, it takes less than 20 minutes from start to finish. If you liked my original Infinity Scarf Tutorial, you will LOVE this one. If you have never done Arm Knitting before, make sure to check out my Learning the Basics video tutorial.
DIY Arm Knitting Scarf
Do you know what the difference is between a Cowl Scarf and an Infinity Scarf? While an Infinity scarf is long, it can be layered around your neck more than once. With the cowl, it is a draping single layer to create the Cowl Scarf. If you are looking for that infinity scarf, you can find my Infinity Scarf Tutorial here!

For this project you will need the following:
- 3 skeins of Thick and Quick (I am using Lion Brand Grey Marble at 106 YD per skein)
For the pattern:
- chain 11 stitches (your slip knot counts as one)
- knit 12 rows
This is one of my favorite video tutorials because it is also one of the easiest. With that being said, you will want to make sure you feel comfortable while Arm Knitting. It is a very easy craft once you learn how to do it. Just remember that it does take a little patience while you are learning it for the first time. In order to help with that, I have also created a video on learning the basics of Arm Knitting. This will really break down how to cast on your arm, how to create the loops, and how to cast off once you are finished with your project. It’s important to follow all of those steps because it can be very frustrating when you are finishing up a beautiful scarf and then you don’t cast off correctly and have to start over. Just take your time and learn the steps and you will be well on your way.

To help you follow along with this project a bit better, I am also including a full video on how I started as well as ended this scarf. Just remember to go to the Learning the Basics video if you get lost or have never done this before like mentioned in the above paragraph. It will help tremendously.
How to Arm Knit
There are so many fun projects you can create with this technique, and while I have shared a couple of videos, I am sharing this NEW PATTERN for you to try and use. Trust me, you will just simply love it.
I hope you enjoy making this quick project as much as I have, and you will be super happy with the quick turnaround time for this project. You can easily whip this out in less than 20 minutes! How about that for a quick and easy accessory?
I love making these super easy projects because they really make wonderful gifts! I have made so many of these for friends and family, and they all say they just adore them. My daughter even taught her home economics class how to Arm Knit in school last year and there were suddenly 50 girls at school with cute chunky scarves in all colors and sizes. Not only that, but the teachers all got involved as well and it was a big hit.
You can easily learn how to make any of these scarves, and once you learn to arm knit you will be so happy you did. It just takes a little patience to learn, and then it’s all easy from there. You can then decide what to make next! There are really so many different projects and options and since scarves aren’t going out of style anytime soon, you can have a closet full of these in no time.
I have made scarves thick and chunky, thin, infinity style, cowl style, blankets, and there are other options as well. All you need is to learn the craft and then let your imagination roam!

There are just so many options and there are so many fun types of yarns to choose from. I love to keep mine chunky and warm, but you can use a thinner yarn as well and make a long, thin neck scarf. Just learning this technique is fun, and giving your first scarf away as a gift is fun, too!

Thanks to my good friend (and hairdresser) Candy for agreeing to be my model again!! She is such a good sport for allowing me to constantly make projects and use her as my model.
Since I have JUST created this pattern, I would ask that you (pretty please) do not remake this post in any way, but feel free to use this pattern to create product for your shops and stores. If you do a blog post – please link back to this original post for the video instruction, rather than re-creating this original pattern.
Do you like to wear scarves? I bet I wear them with almost every single fall and winter outfit I have. It’s become a staple for me, like wearing jeans! If I am going out, I usually have one of my fun scarves wrapped around my neck to keep me warm, and stylish! They are just so fast and easy, that you can literally have as many of these as you want in as many different styles and colors as you want. I don’t see them going out of style anytime soon!
What do you think? Are you going to give this project a try? Have you ever Arm Knitted before? Are you ready to learn? This is one of my favorite projects and I wear mine all of the time. If you love this project as much as I do, please feel free to share this DIY Arm Knitting Chunky Cowl Scarf with all of your friends!

I have not ever tried arm knitting. I do a lot of regular knitting and use large needles sometimes. I like how this turned out – very pretty. I might have to try it one day.
We were just talking about this at work and wondered how many we’d have to go through on you tube to figure it out 🙂 thanks for the head start.
That’s awesome Terri, so glad it’s helping out!
what kind of yarn to you use to make a blanket?
Heather I like to use chunky yarn, the chunkier (heavier) the better.
I have never done any type of knitting before, but this looks awesome! I was diagnosed with a rare chronic pain condition called trigeminal neuralgia and one of the triggers of pain for me is when my face gets cold…. This may be the answer! I can’t wait to try! Thanks so much for sharing.
