Tri Tip roast made in the instant pot with vegetables and served in a white dish.

I love cooking a roast in the pressure cooker because it is always an easy recipe and a delicious meal. This Tri-Tip roast is one of my favorites! Other great Instant Pot Roast recipes include this Instant Pot Pot Roast and Instant Pot Mississippi Pot Roast. I am confident you will love them just as much as our whole family does.

What is a Tri Tip?

Tri Tip is a triangular shape cut of beef from the sirloin subprimal. The Tri Tip is known as a lean cut and good cut of meat with its rich flavor, tender texture, and less expensive price tag.

How do I get the Tri-Tip ready before cooking?

First, you will want to remove the fat from the bottom of the Tri Tip roast. Take a sharp knife and cut the fatty bottom off of the roast. Once you have the fat cut from the roast, you are ready to get started.

Ingredients Needed:

  • Tri Tip Roast (2 1/2 – 3lbs)
  • beef broth
  • garlic powder
  • onion powder
  • ground black pepper
  • olive oil
Tri Tip sautéed in the Instant Pot with ingredients needed to make the meal complete.

How to Make Tri Tip in the Instant Pot

  1. Add the seasonings to a small bowl and set aside.
  2. Turn the Instant Pot on and set it to saute mode. Allow a few minutes for the pressure cooker to get hot.
  3. Add the olive oil to the bottom of the pot and place the sirloin tip roast cut of meat into the bottom. Allow the roast to saute for a few minutes. Flip the bottom of the sirloin to the top and allow it to continue to saute for a few minutes. Remove the roast from the Instant Pot ad set it aside.
  4. Turn off the saute function and press cancel before you add the cups of beef broth to the bottom of the Instant Pot. Use a wooden spoon or the scraper tool that came with the pressure cooker to scrape the brown pieces of meat from the bottom.
  5. Top the roast with the bowl of seasonings. Add the seasoned roast back to the Instant Pot.
  6. Lock the lid into place and set the pressure to Hi Manual pressure. Cook the roast on high pressure for 10 minutes. Carefully do a quick release.
  7. Add the potatoes and carrots to the Instant Pot and lock the lid in place, set to high pressure, and cook for an additional 15 minutes.
  8. Allow the Instant Pot to natural release pressure for 10 minutes before performing a quick manual release.
  9. Remove the roast from the electric pressure cooker and let the roast rest for 5 minutes. Carefully slice the roast and serve with the potatoes and carrots.

Tri Tip Roast FAQs

How do I make gravy with the remaining liquid in the Instant Pot?

Once you’ve cooked the Tri Tip, potatoes, and carrots, it’s time to make the gravy. Remove the roast and vegetables from the Instant Pot and leave the liquid. Turn the Instant Pot onto the saute function again and then add 1 1/2 tablespoons of cornstarch to the drippings. Use a whisk and stir continuously until this delicious gravy is smooth and as thick as desired.

Pour the gravy into a gravy boat to serve with the roast and vegetables.

How do I know when my Tri Tip is cooked?

You can use an Instant Read thermometer and check the internal temperature of the roast. It will read 135 F for rare, 140 F for medium-rare, and 145 F for medium. Add a little extra time in the Instant Pot if needed to reach your optimal and desired doneness.

What do I serve with Instant Pot Tri Tip?

I always make potatoes and carrots with this roast, but I will also serve it over white rice and top it with gravy made from the drippings. It’s my favorite way to serve this dinner recipe.

My entire family loves this tip roast recipe and it always exceeds my dinner goals. It’s an easy way to make a hearty meal and get dinner on the table relatively quickly, with much less cooking time than using the oven. The only thing better than having this tri tip roast made in the Instant Pot is having someone else make it for you! 🙂
