Because there are so many types of fresh fruits, when planning a fruit board, there are a few factors you need to think about before shopping. For beautiful boards, pick your favorite fruits, along with what is in season, and be sure to have a variety of ripe fruit so when put together, you have colorful board presentation.
When picking types of fruit, try to pick a variety of shapes so that pieces of fruit can easily fill in gaps to cover the entire board. Garnish with fresh herbs for even more color!
- Summer Fruits and Berries-because these are so colorful in variety, I usually try to pick at least four of five types of berries. Raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and golden berries. Apple slices and green apples slices, along with green grapes, can also add texture and color varieties.
- Tropical Fruits-mangos, fresh pineapple, passionfruit, papaya, starfruit, coconut chunks, and bananas are always fun choices. Just be sure to slice bananas right before serving, or spritz with lemon juice spray to slow down browning.
- Citrus Fruits– slices make for easy serving, which makes orange slices, blood oranges, mandarins, and grapefruits, are easy ways to fill your board, with a variety of choices.
- Melons-Watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew melons are perfect. Make a bowl out of a melon rind, like watermelon or cantaloupe, then fill with melon balls. If you don’t have time to make the balls, you can easily cut bite-sized pieces or triangles to fill the bowl, or just place on your charcuterie board.
- Seasonal fruits-If you are making a seasonal fruit board, you can add grapes, cherries, nectarines, apricots, peaches, pears, pomegranate seeds, plums or even sugared cranberries.
Beautiful Fruit Charcuterie Board Ideas
The fun thing about this fruit board, is that it doesn’t have to be JUST fruit! To fill in spaces on the board, add nuts like almonds, pecans, or walnuts. Flavored small crackers are also a great additional to this board, and can make a cute barrier in between the variety of fruits.
Small bowls of a fruit dip or yogurt dip, can add a unique touch of color in between the fruits. If you don’t have time to pre-make a dip, you can add honey, chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, whipped cream, or even try an easy spread like marshmallow cream, or peanut butter.
Small candy pieces like mini chocolate bars or chocolate dipped pretzels are great additions to a board, along with small pieces of angel food cake.
There are a variety of cheeses that can make a simple fruit charcuterie board into a work of art! Small cheese slices, a wedge of goat cheese, or rolled up pieces of meat add protein and savory flavors to what could easily be a very sweet board. Don’t be afraid to add your favorite fruits and mix things up on your board!

To make your board, it’s easier if you begin with the larger fruit and small bowls first being placed on the board. If you are making a board with a theme of colors, numbers, or a name, place those elements in first.
Lay out slices and smaller pieces, filling in your board as you continue adding. I like to keep types of fruits together, but not all in one cluster, but you can really make your board any way you like it!

Feel free to move things around, stack, or fan out things like cookies, bunches of grapes, or strawberry slices.
FAQ’s
Can I make this fruit board ahead of time?
You can easily make your board ahead of time, as long as it can be covered with plastic wrap and kept in the refrigerator. Most boards may not fit in the fridge, so just prep as much as you can before your party, keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator, and then put it together just before serving time. I wouldn’t let fruits be at room temperature for more than a couple of hours.
How do I store leftovers?
Gather up leftover fruit and seal in a zip lock bag or airtight container in the refrigerator. Usually, once fruits are sliced, they will only be good for 1-2 days. Leftovers can easily be refigured the next morning for a beautiful breakfast charcuterie board.
How much fruit will I need per person?
A full fruit serving is about 1 cup of fruit, or 4-6 ounces. However, if you are serving other foods besides this charcuterie board, you could adjust that.
