When I make chicken fried steak my husband is a very happy man. It’s one of his favorite dishes that he grew up with when he was a kid, and it’s something he loves to have every Sunday after church.
And we love making dinner in the air fryer. As a result, some of my favorite dinners are Air Fryer Bacon Wrapped Chicken, Air Fryer Pork Chops, and Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan. This is seriously the best chicken fried steak recipe and is definitely one of my all-time favorites.
This is a simple air fryer cube steak recipe that’s made with just a few ingredients and seasonings. In fact, you’ll probably have most of the ingredients on hand and only have to pick up cubed steak from the grocery store.

- all purpose flour
- baking powder
- ground black pepper

How to Make Chicken Fried Steak in the Air Fryer
In a large shallow bowl combine flour, paprika, salt, black pepper, white pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and baking powder. Whisk together and set aside.
In a second bowl combine the milk, egg, and hot sauce. Mix well.
Take the fresh cube steaks and dip them into the flour mixture, then into the milk and egg mixture, and then back into the flour mixture.
Repeat this with all of your cube steaks and place them on a baking sheet.
Spray both sides of the prepared cube steaks with a light spritz of olive oil cooking spray.
Prepare the air fryer basket with olive oil cooking spray or with perforated parchment paper.
Place the cube steaks in a single layer in the air fryer basket and cook at 400 F. for 8 minutes. Use a spatula to carefully flip each steak, spray once more with olive oil spray, and cook for another 5-6 minutes until the tops are golden brown with a crispy coating.
NOTES: All air fryers cook differently. This recipe was made using a Cosori 5.8 qt air fryer. If using a different brand of air fryer, you may need to add or take away a minute or two. These cubed steaks were a little larger and needed to be cooked two at a time to allow room for the air to circulate. Make sure to coat the steaks well with olive oil spray.
FAQs
What do I serve with chicken fried steak?
We always serve our chicken fried steak with homemade white gravy. For sides, some of my favorite options include field peas, black-eyed peas, cornbread, green beans, corn, mashed potatoes, rice, and salad. No matter what sides we choose to serve, we always top the steaks with white country gravy, but you can serve it with brown gravy, too.
If you want to add a little spice to your steak, add a little hot sauce to it. We love to add a little extra flavor with a splash of Tabasco or Louisiana hot sauce before topping it with gravy.
What type of steak is cube steak?
Cube steak is also known as cubed steak or minute steak and is typically taken from the top round or bottom round near the rump. It’s a tenderized cut of steak that is perfect for several dishes, including soups and stews.
How do I make Chicken Fried Steak from Frozen?
If you’re making store-bought chicken fried steak you may need to adjust this recipe as the cubed steak will probably be smaller than a homemade version of chicken fried steak. If cooking chicken fried steak from frozen, cook at 400 degrees Fahrenheit with a cook time of 8-11 minutes.
How do I make white gravy?
White gravy, or country gravy, is a thick and yummy gravy to top on this classic southern dish. To make this creamy homemade gravy recipe you need 1/4 cup of butter, 2 Tablespoons of flour, 1 cup of milk, and 1/2-1 teaspoon of ground black pepper, and salt to taste. Place a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat and melt the butter. Slowly whisk in the flour, salt, and pepper. It will be thick and paste like because you haven’t added in the milk yet, that’s next.
Slowly whisk in the milk, a little at a time. The gravy will start to thicken as you continue to whisk over the heat. Whisk until there are no clumps Once the gravy has thickened to your liking, remove it from the heat, add salt to taste and additional pepper if desired, and serve.
I love that this dish is a healthier chicken fried steak versus the traditional way of deep frying this recipe. No need to use any hot oil. It’s like having fried food without having all of the bad stuff that goes along with it.
Give it a try and you’ll understand why this is my husband’s favorite meal.

Now this is something I haven’t yet tried in the air fryer! You can’t go wrong with chicken fried steak, and if I can eliminate a lot of the grease, I consider it a win. Definitely going to try this.

I am so new to air fryers and I am a bit confused. I know what the basket is, at least according to the users guide of my machine. My question is when you say to put your chicken fried steak into the basket, do you mean on the floor of the basket or on the crisper tray? The reason for my question is because it has been said that “air” needs to circulate and if there is meat on the floor of the basket it cannot air fry and circulate. If this is a dumb question, I am sorry. I would like to try the chicken fried steak but I don’t want to mess it up. If you would answer my question then I will certainly give your recipe a try.

The basket of my air fryer is two pieces. One is the actual basket piece and the top piece is a little elevated part of the basket that has air holes. If you look at the photos, you will see it is on the basket piece that allows the air flow to circulate. 🙂
