How to Make Shredded Chicken
Chicken is the perfect ingredient to use when you are batch cooking for the week or making freezer meals. I love to meal prep, and chicken is usually one of the main ingredients on my list. It’s easy, inexpensive, and can make a ton of different recipes.
Making shredded chicken is easy to do. There are only a few steps to make shredded chicken breasts for your favorite recipes.
- Boil a large pot of water. Add salt and pepper to taste.
- Add boneless skinless chicken breasts to boiling water.
- Cook chicken for 20 minutes.
- Remove chicken breasts and shred.
Before I go any further, I wanted to share with you three easy ways to shred chicken. There are a few ways you can shred the chicken, but these are my favorite:
- Use two forks to shred
- Using a hand mixer
- Use my Kitchen Aid stand mixer
If I am not in a hurry I will use two forks and shred the chicken. If I am in a hurry and making a lot of recipes, I find the easiest way to shred is by using my stand mixer. If I am REALLY in a hurry I will skip boiling my own chicken and go and grab a Rotisserie chicken from the deli.
Can You Freeze Shredded Chicken Before Adding Ingredients?
The best part of batch cooking is that you can make and shred chicken and freeze it before you decided exactly what recipe you want to make. You can do this in just a few simple steps:
- Boil the chicken until fully cooked.
- Shred the chicken and allow it to slightly cool.
- Add the shredded chicken to a freezer safe airtight bag for up to 3 months.
- To heat, thaw in the fridge overnight and reheat with your favorite ingredients.
When I am using frozen shredded chicken, it’s easy to add the perfect blend of seasonings, vegetables, sauces, and sides to create my favorite recipes. Perfect for weeknights when you just don’t have time to cook.
