How to Cook Sweet Potatoes on the Grill
First, gather the ingredients and supplies you will need for this recipe:
- sweet potatoes
- butter (melted and placed in a spray bottle)
- cinnamon
- foil
Heat the grill up to 350. You can use gas or charcoal, but we always grill on our Big Green Egg. We use lump charcoal (it burns longer and holds temperature better) and love the flavors and steadiness from this grill. If you don’t own one or have never had a meal cooked on a lump charcoal grill, you’re missing out.
Carefully slice the sweet potatoes into one-inch rounds. I find using sharp ceramic knived work best for this vegetable.
It’s ok to be a little off with the thickness of the rounds, sweet potatoes aren’t the easiest thing to cut.
How to Make the Best Grilled Sweet Potatoes
Once all of the potatoes have been cut, spray a little butter on both sides, and then add a little sprinkle of cinnamon to both sides.
Place the buttered and seasoned potato rounds on top of a sheet of foil.
When you are ready to grill, place the foil over the grates and spray with more butter. This will keep the sweet potatoes from sticking to the foil.
Close the lid. You will cook the sweet potatoes for about 30 minutes. Make sure to flip them often. Occasionally spray with additional butter and add a little additional cinnamon if needed.
After 30 minutes, take a bite of one and make sure it is soft and delicious. If not soft, you may need to cook a little longer.
What to Serve with Grilled Sweet Potatoes
Remove from the grill and serve immediately or cover with foil to serve with your meal. We love to pair this with our grilled pork chops and grilled zucchini recipe. They are so delicious!

Do you peel the sweet potatoes or leave the skin on?
We peel the sweet potatoes.
I semi cook tthe sweet potatoes in a microwave… then slice them about 1/2in thick… using a smalll sharp paring knife I slice around the inner peel to remove it… then sprinkle salt & pepper, a little ginger, and the ground allspice on the topside of each patty… drizzle olive oil on one side and place them seasoned side down on an oiled lined foil on the grill… then repeat the process on the other side …. cook on a medium/high heat for about 4 minutes and then turn for about another 4 minutes… they should be should somewhat carmalized & dark brown in appearance … if u want dabble butter on each … Can also use a skillet instead of a grill… make these for breakfast with eggs…. delish !!
YUM! That sounds amazing.
